The Union Digital Center (UDC) is a Union-based digital center in Bangladesh, aimed at providing information services to grassroots people at their doorsteps. [1] [2] Under the Access to Information Program (A2I) of the Office of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, pilot activities of CEC were started on a pilot basis in Madhainagar Union Parishad of Tarash Upazila of Sirajganj and Mushidhat Union Parishad of Setabganj Upazila of Dinajpur District.
History
In the light of experience in this pilot project, in 2007 the Local Government Department of Bangladesh with the help of A2I program came out of CEC in 30 Union Parishads and established Union Information and Service Centers. Following this, in 2009 the local government department again set up union information and service centers in 100 union parishads with the help of A2I. At present (2012) National Local Government Institutions under the Department of Local Government are coordinating these unions' information and service centers. Later it was renamed as Union Digital Center. In 2014, the Local Government Department decided to set up 1000 more centers by June of that year. According to the decision, already (2012) 1000 Union Parishads and for this, 2000 entrepreneurs have been selected from these Union Parishads. Keeping in mind the equality of men and women, a local young man and a young woman were selected from among the entrepreneurs in each Union Parishad. These entrepreneurs invest a certain amount of money and enter into an agreement with the union council. The Chairman of the Union Parishad, Upazila Nirbahi Officer is directly involved in this entrepreneur selection process and the local Deputy Commissioner is informed.
In May 2010, the Prime Minister's Office's A2I program organized a training of trainers with the aim of forming an experienced team of 100 trainers. Entrepreneurs of various telecentres under Bangladesh Computer Council and Bangladesh Telecentre Network took part in this training. Under whose leadership entrepreneurial training activities will be conducted at district level.
At present there are 4,501 union information and service centers across the country.
